E-Caller Thoughts 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Lately I've come to find myself thinking about snow goose e-callers and specifically the speakers. a few thoughts/questions have come to mind after building my first e-caller over the past winter/spring.

to preface my questions, this spring i ran a 100w amp and 2-4 30W rms 5x8 horn speakers running at 8 ohms.

volume from this rig was sufficient, but i find myself wondering about the actual sounds being produced in the field, and where the horns actually direct the sound.

for the average snow goose spread, would multiple e-callers with numerous speakers really be the ticket? or is it better to have your sound located where you want the birds to work?

also, i am tinkering with the idea of running a dedicated "feeder" e-caller in addition to the traditional sounds next spring; with weather resistant woofers to better reproduce the low end frequencies...mainly all the murmurs and what not. i would like to create that low roar type sound that can be heard at a distance, but eliminate all the high pitched sounds. i've played various snow goose tracks on my home theater speakers, and compared to the little horns, its a night and day difference in clarity and frequency reproduction.

with the abundance of used amps, crossovers, and weather resistant speakers out there, i can't think of a reason not to try it out.
anybody else ever ponder anything like this?

I have as well. I dont think that it would hurt one bit. If you've got the cash to buy/build another e-caller then I would. I wanted to run 2 set-ups with 4 speakers each. One of those was going to be used exclusively for feeding sounds.

The wooofers are better by far for the low end sounds, I had one in my last setup that we normally placed just behind the blinds, the horns arent that great at producing the low end sounds, so it seems logical.

I wonder more about dead spots that horns might produce, they seem to be so directional that if you have all of them facing towards where the birds work, if they pass over it might get real quiet and spook em.

I think 2 callers is better than one, I don't know how many would be better thou, portability is more important to me than running five callers and all the stuff they need. If I could drive into a field, a number of them would be great to try.

i think i'm going to go overboard this winter with what i have in mind to build. i know for a fact come spring i'm going to have a dual sound unit built in 1 enclosure. 2 separate 2 channel amps, with the ability to run 2 woofers and 2 horns off one unit, and 4 weather proof midrange woofer/tweeter combos. crossovers, remote on/off, 2 mp3 players, this thing could be fun.

You would have a mini best buy out there in the field. That should be awesome though no doubt about it.

And with your good looks you should have them dropping from the sky!

Sound placement and quality is always something to consider in a spread. The last couple of years I find more guys running multiple callers with multiple speakers. Give it a shot.

Mitch, not to rain on your parade or tell you not to try it but I've seen quite a few guys try the woofer. It usually ends up being more hassle than the slight benifit you'll get. It seems that frequency tuning on the amp and filtering sound tracks may be the more important.
As for running a couple different sounds, I very seldom set up with less than one sound in the spread. The most important thing anytime you're hunting waterfowl is getting the birds into the spread. Then get them to set up where you want them. Spreading speakers out is the best way to simulate a live group of birds. A guy can get away with spreading the sound around the spread and still get the birds to finish with the sound by playing the right sounds in the right area. Direction of speakers and volume are always important.
My two cents.

yeah i've talked to a few guys that ran subwoofers as well, and there probably is no clear cut benefit to running dedicated subs, but i think there is a place for mid-range woofer/tweeter combos inplace of directional horn speakers. the horns are great for directing sound to a certain area, and i still know i will be employing a number of horns to line the birds up, but for that overall feeding noise, i think that the combo speakers will be a more efficient use of available power. i don't know...like i said, i just started thinking about a few ideas...

We need one of those vans that has like 500 speakers in it, it will be like an atomic sound bomb, we could kill whole flocks with a sound wave!
