Well the family decided to chase roosters over New Years this year in the great state of ND. We headed out Thursday and hunted through Sunday. Saturday was cold to say the least. -38 F when we stepped out of the truck to hunt that morning. Got to about -15 F for the day. Sunday was -20 F which seemed like a heat wave. All in all a fun trip. It was my Dad's old gal, Sadie's last trip. She went out on a good one!
I agree Bryan, way more reward, but I personally would rather hunt in colder weather with few guys. I was actually surprised by the number of guys still "hunting". A lot of them were driving around, but still I was surprised at that.
Ryan, it was calm, at least to start. By mid day the wind was up to 5-10 which made it worse I think than in the morning. It wasn't too bad once you got into come cover but walking across some open fields to get to cover was a bit chilly!
I think we saw 4 or 5. I rolled one, Kev rolled one and the farmer we were hunting with killed one. I also saw one fox but that was lying dead in a slough. Definately BIG coyotes! But when you are shooting 4-6 shot, it is hard to take them down. Heard some guys calling them one day. Cold, crisp morning made for the noise carrying a long distance.
I see only one problem with the pic Where is SADDIE! her last hunt she should have been in front of her labors good hunt Men I hope to hunt your state once with my boys..
i always throw a 3.5" hevi shot BB or a 3.5" #4 turkey load, or 3.5" 00 buck in for my 4th and 5th shot when hunting those late season cattail sloughs. probably shot my last 4 yotes and fox this way. just gotta remember 3 shots are for roosters...not 4...unless they get waaaaay out there!
